Mammography

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, other than skin cancer. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer.

About 182,460 women in the United States will be found to have invasive breast cancer in 2008, according to the American Cancer Society. The chance of a woman having invasive breast cancer some time during her life is about one in eight.

The risk of developing breast cancer increases sharply with age. Over 75 percent of breast cancers are diagnosed in women aged 50 and older. Regularly scheduled screening mammography is the most effective way to find breast cancer early, when there are more treatment options. Working with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), CFMC is committed to providing educational materials and physician office assistance to increase mammography screening for Colorado Medicare beneficiaries.
